In this senior position, you will assume overall responsibility for all technical matters, relating to the safe and reliable operation of all RoPax Ferries, High Speed Craft, Terminals, Linkspans and Red Funnel property. In addition, the postholder will also be responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of Planned Maintenance Systems including dockings and refits; Purchasing Systems and budgets; whilst ensuring that all technical staff carry out their duties in accordance with their respective job descriptions.

A former Chief Engineer with a proven track record in long-term strategy development and budgetary control will be essential requirements, as well as strong leadership skills and initiative. Commercial experience within the ferry industry will be an advantage, although a pragmatic approach to problem solving in a highly customer focussed organisation will be extremely valuable.

You should be able to demonstrate previous successes in managing organisational change and possess excellent communication skills, as liaison with external bodies, customers, staff and unions will be a key element of the job.

Reporting to the Fleet Director, this is a stimulating role for a unique individual who can influence at a senior level and motivate colleagues and staff to maximise business efficiency.

Overall Purpose of the Job:
Senior manager responsible for the technical upkeep of all the Company’s vessels, associated shore infrastructure, terminals and head office, to ensure that they are operated to the highest standard in compliance with regulatory requirements, in accordance with Red Funnel’s safety, quality and environmental policies and procedures, ensuring close budgetary control.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. In conjunction with the Marine Manager, planning, controlling and execution of all activities connected with maintenance, repairs, survey and certification, drydocking, conversion or modification and new building of all vessels in the fleet.

2. Formulating a dynamic work plan and action list with the vessel’s senior officers, to ensure that vessels are maintained in accordance with Red Funnel’s policies and to receive regular reports on progress.

3. Controlling the vessel performance, shipboard maintenance and repair programmes, drydockings, deficiencies, quality and flag surveys and to ensure that these are completed within the required time.

4. To plan maintenance in accordance with Company’s requirements, but not delay in effecting repairs that would jeopardize the safety of the vessel, its passengers or crew, or present an unacceptable risk to the environment.

5. Exercise commercial control and optimisation of expenditure in the operation and maintenance of Company vessels and terminals. Ensure budgets are managed and all costs assessed through close control assisted by the Fleet Support Officer.

6. Provide supplier assessment and review as required by the Company’s quality system.

7. Keep the Red Funnel Board advised of technical problems which arise on the ships and terminals that may affect the commercial reliability of the operation.

8. Working with other members of the Fleet Management Team, co-ordinate all data required for the preparation of the operational budget. Ensure that strict cost control on all aspects of expenditure is enforced and take necessary action to operate at budget level.

9. Ensure Company Policy and Directives, issued by the Fleet Director in relation to the technical operation of the vessels, are implemented through the Fleet Department.

10. Ensure Technical Staff carry out their duties in accordance with their respective job descriptions and maintain performance records.

11. Conduct Performance Development Reviews of technical staff and identify training requirements.

12. Maintain standards in technical staff that provide the highest standard achievable within the statutory requirements for certification and aspire to levels above the minimum standard.

13. Continuously monitor the effectiveness of the Planned Maintenance and Condition Monitoring Systems operated in the Fleet. Develop and improve systems to suit current and future requirements.

14. Monitor vessel performance trends including speed, fuel and lubricating oil consumptions and take remedial actions where these are outside agreed or expected parameters.

15. Vessel inspections, safety and technical, must be completed within the agreed schedule to comply with the Safety Management System.

16. Co-ordinate and approve repair specifications, including any major drydock works, ensuring that full reports are prepared and retained.

17. Ensure Technical Department administration is properly carried out.


18. Responsible for coordination of:-
­ Design and construction of new builds.
­ Dry dock specifications and reports.
­ Scheduling for maintenance and surveys.
­ Breakdown, Down Time and Accident information.

19. Other specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:-

­ Processing damage claims.
­ Maintaining and controlling Fleet spares.
­ Liaison with, control and verification of work by sub-contractors.
­ Authorising payment of sub-contractors and suppliers’ invoices.
­ Loss recovery on uninsured damage.
­ Superintending new buildings.
­ Overview of dockings, refits, vessel trials and commissioning.
­ Technical input for legal disputes.
­ Verifications and auditing of technical records.
­ Liaison with MCA and Classification Societies.
­ Compliance with SMS requirements.
­ Investigation and selection of new equipment.
­ Supervision of inclining experiments, tests, etc.
­ Attendance at damage surveys, UK and Europe
­ Design improvements to existing equipment.

20. In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the job holder is required to perform other duties assigned from time to time.

Qualifications/ Education Required:

Chief Engineer (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency


Experience Required:

Seagoing Chief Engineer for minimum of 2 years and ship management experience in ferry operations:

Technical Manager
Ship Superintendent
Ship Repair Manager
Marine Surveyor (Engineering)

Aptitude/ Skill Required:


Passenger/ Customer Orientated
Good interpersonal skills
Excellent Communicator
