Red Funnel

Compliance of the ISM Code for Red Funnel relates to both shipboard and shore based operations and each area is certificated as follows;

• Document of Compliance (DOC) - Shore (Operations Department)
• Safety Management Certificate (SMC) - Vessels

Although not exhaustive, the ISM Code is divided into four main areas.

• Management - Policy, Supervision, Responsibility, Monitoring and Review
• Staff - Competence, Training, Information, Communications and Motivation
• Vessels and Equipment - Maintenance, Inspections, Defect Reporting
• Procedures - Operational Procedures, Emergency Procedures etc.

The ISM Code ensures compliance within the following areas of safety management, and Red Funnel must have written and proven policies and procedures to meet compliance of the following objectives:-

• Safety and Environmental Protection Policy
• Company Responsibilities and Authority
• A Designated Person Ashore (Communications between Ship and Shore)
• Masters Responsibility and Authority
• Resources and Personnel
• Development of Plans for Shipboard Operations
• Emergency Preparedness
• Accident and Incident Reporting
• Maintenance of Ship and Equipment
• Documentation
• Verification, Review and Evaluation
• Certification, Verification and Control

Under these objectives, Red Funnel sets out to meet the code in all aspects by having in place various safety and procedural manuals. Managers of the Fleet Management Group (FMG) are assigned responsibility for specific manuals. Each manual is 'live' and the contents are controlled through a formal control, review and monitoring process. If a new policy or procedure is required or an amendment is necessary then this is done in a controlled fashion. This ensures total Quality Assurance Management, which is paramount to operating a safe passenger ferry business.
