Walk the Wight 2008
Walk the Wight 2008
Walk the Wight is the largest sponsored walk in the South, and this year takes place on 18 May.
In addition to the three well-trodden routes usually on offer, this year sees the introduction of a Flat Route for those who may not wish to, or be able to climb those punishing hills.
2008 Walks
- Bembridge to Alum Bay 26.5 miles
- Bembridge to Carisbrooke 12.5 miles
- Carisbrooke to Alum Bay 14 miles
- Sandown to Newport (Flat Walk) 8 miles
Registration for the walk is now closed, but you can join in on the day, with a minimum £5 entry fee.
All the routes will be marshalled and there will be toilet and water breaks on the route with refreshments available at the finish line.

The Hospice
The walk is held in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice in Newport. The hospice is the centre for palliative care on the Island and has an In-Patient Ward with 16 individual rooms, a Day-Care unit, Out-Patient unit, Hospice@Home team and a Family Counselling & Bereavement team.
The Hospice cares for over 800 patients each year and whilst most patients suffer from cancer the Hospice cares for an increasing number of patients suffering from other life-shortening conditions such as motor-neurone disease, renal failure, congestive heart disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many patients use the Hospice over several years, and the service is free to patients.
Walk the Wight provides about 10% of the funds the Hospice needs to keep providing this valuable lifeline each year. In 2007 Walk the Wight raised over £217,000 and they're hoping to raise even more this year!
