Red Squirrel Events
Great events for all the family...
The Wight Squirrel Project organise a a series of events throughout the year. Here’s a flavour of what took place in 2007. 2008 events will be posted shortly, including special events for Red Squirrel week in October 2008
Events, unless otherwise stated, cost £2 per adult and £1 per child.
Bushy Tail Club members are half price (50p) if you wear your badge. One event is free, as indicated.
If you have a current adoption certificate and bring it along, it’s also half price.
April - A look at the Wildlife around Freshwater Fruit Farm. Meet at the farm in Wilmingham Lane, Freshwater at 10am. Contact: Simon Craddock 01983 248151
May - Guided walk around private woodland at Newnham Farm. By kind permission of Mr & Mrs Cleaver. It’s the start of ‘The Isle of Wight Walking Festival’ so meet us in the farmyard at 5pm for a drink and chat. We leave at 5.30pm for a gentle walk. Contact: Helen Butler 01983 857101
June - Feed squirrels at Alverstone Mead Starting 9.30am Meet by Alverstone Village Hall for a walk to the hide to watch for, and learn about, squirrels. Leader: Jessie Booth 01983 740662. This event is free for Bush y Tail Club members.
July - Picnic and bat watch at Freshwater Fruit Farm. Starts 7.30pm. Bring along your picnic. Bat detector provided. Contact: Simon Craddock 01983 248151
August - Fort Victoria Day. We will have a stall at this event. No entry fee. Contact: Helen Butler 01983 857101
September - A walk along the old railway track between Yarmouth and Freshwater. Meet at the Yarmouth end of the track for a walk along the track and a visit to Mill Copse. Learn about the copse and it’s wildlife and corridor links. Leader: Jessie Booth 01983 740662
October - Nut hunt at Nunwell. Starting 10am. Meet at the Brading end of Brading Down (watch out for a ‘Red Squirrel’ sign) for a walk in Kelly’s Copse to look for squirrel dreys and feeding signs.. Contact: Jessie Booth 01983 740662.
November - Survey woodland wildlife. Starting 10am Join Helen to inspect dormouse and bird boxes at Freshwater Fruit Farm, Wilmingham Lane. Contact: Helen Butler 01983 857101

Magnifying glasses and binoculars are available to borrow for some of these events
